The X-Files Revival by Islandstar
The X-Files Revival
by Chelsea Lowe (Islandstar) @

Here it is! I’ve been working on this for a while now during my free time in between freelance projects.

Revival poster featuring a current-day Mulder and Scully. Everybody’s favorite FBI agents return in The X-Files on January 24, 2016 on FOX! Mark your calendars! :alien: :ufo:

I have a couple more XF Revival-themed posters planned. I have another book cover to get started on first though. Time to get back to work!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Islandstar

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an introduction to scratchboard illustration for me. I believe that scratchboard is very appropriate to use for the horror genre because of its often unique and dark look, so I decided to create a poster for my favorite short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving.
In order to show how powerful and iconic the Headless Horseman is, I chose to depict him on his famed horse. With the title in the background, the horse is rearing up on its hind legs, oozing with power and the urgency to gallop away into the night. In addition, I added a thick, solid white line around the horse and his rider in order to further solidify the idea that they are ghostly, supernatural creatures not to be reckoned with.
Face Your Fear - spread by Islandstar

Magazine Spread

Part two of a project. View part one here.

I took the black-and-white illustration and incorporated it into a two-page magazine spread. I first took the illustration and converted it to a solid black-and-white bitmap image so that there were no gray values present. Just black and white. I then brought that new image into InDesign and began working it into a two-page magazine spread.
I was also allowed to use one color in addition to black and white. After going through several colors, I settled on a bold, yellow/gold color. In color psychology, yellow is considered to be the most visible color, which is what makes it a good choice for warnings and things that should be approached with caution. With this in mind, I imagined that this spread would appear in a magazine related to the outdoors and that the article would be about facing a possible fear of snakes and being cautious of them when doing outdoor activities – such as hiking.

Pen and Ink
12 in x 15 in

Part one of a project. View part two here.

We were asked to create a pen and ink illustration depicting a fear that some people may have. My choice for this is a fear of snakes. Personally, I’m not afraid of snakes (I love snakes and find them fascinating and regal), but I know snakes are a common fear for a lot of people.
In order to get across the concept of being fearful of snakes, I took a look at the most common reason why people are afraid of snakes. That reason is that they are afraid of the fangs and getting bit by a snake. From there, it was pretty easy to make the decision to focus on a snake’s mouth and setting up the composition as if the snake were striking out at the viewer.
Long time no talk, dA? Over the past couple years, I've been obsessing over Tumblr, so that's where most of my "social media time" is usually spent. :P

I'm still alive, and I even graduated college this past December! And I applied for graduate school. If I'm accepted, I'll be pursuing an MFA with a focus on graphic design.

I'm going to be in the process of cleaning up my deviation submissions. Maybe moving the mediocre and off-topic stuff to my scraps. And deleting the awful deviations or the deviations that didn't get much attention. I wish there was a way to mass-delete and mass-move deviations instead of doing them one by one. I have a lot of deviations that I need to get rid of.

For the past, like, month I've been going through a phase where I don't like anything that I create. To get my creative groove back I will be doing a series of portrait and character studies. Maybe experiment with a couple different styles? We'll see how it goes.

I also have quite a bit of work to post, so I might post a couple of my newer digital paintings over the next week or so. I'd like to get back to using dA more.
